Modern Artifact

While the owners admired the original Queen Anne style of the home, they desired a minimalist, gallery-inspired interior for living. The clients, passionate about modern architecture, envisioned a contemporary space and an art gallery aesthetic. Alongside a major restoration effort, the team focused on a design approach that juxtaposed the old “artifact” with modern “insertions.”

The real star of the show is the sinuous grand staircase, molded with solid surface material and complemented by floating oak treads. Defined by soft curves and subtle recesses, the winding sculptural stair solidly anchors and unifies all four levels of the home.

The interiors provide moments of whimsy and joy by strategically inserting sculptural pieces into an otherwise subdued backdrop. Aligned with their ethos of minimalism and restraint, the team adhered to a limited palette of European wide-plank white oak, concrete, steel, and white solid surface material.

In the primary bathroom, an arrangement of angular terrazzo monoliths masquerade as a double vanity.
